Born and raised in Vancouver, Stuart has lived in the James Bay region of northern Quebec, Nunavut, China, Malaysia and Nepal, as well as in Victoria, Ottawa, Montreal and now in east Vancouver.
Stuart is a Special Education teacher and is currently Vice-President of the Vancouver Secondary Teachers' Association and a Director of the BCTF Assistance Society. He is active in the campaign for full funding of public education and is an advocate for students with special needs.
Stuart is Past President of SPEC (the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation) and is active in parks and green space issues in Vancouver, with a focus on access, preservation and conservation.
Stuart has been a volunteer with May’s Place, a free-standing hospice on the downtown eastside, as well as the Mission to Seafarers in the port area.
